The Lost Ways Review: Books for self-sufficiency

This is my first review for this website and I have decided to outline and review a series of books that I personally own. The Lost Ways book series.

They describe and detail the way pioneers and our ancestors lived hundreds of years ago. They also offer procedures that relate to being self-sufficient, living from the land and surviving this brutal planet the way it used to be done.

The Lost Ways

Growing up I always thought my parents were old-fashioned, my father being born in the 40s and mother in the 50s. I thought their ways were antiquated and outdated. Little did I know there is so much value in the wisdom of our elders.

The Lost Ways book goes in depth on basic how-to-do things like raising animals, making butter from milk and cream, protecting yourself from the elements, curing meats, root cellars, making glue from pine resin, farming, making breads as well as hunting and trapping.

Having a resource like this is invaluable. Whether it sits on your shelf in case you need it someday or you put it to use every day. The survival techniques and simple life skills that it offers makes it a book that should be held onto for life.

The Lost Ways II

The Lost ways II is the sequel to The Lost Ways and it expands on the knowledge in the first book and even has a few extra things to throw in. It’s pages have information that will be very useful in times of need or if you just want to learn.

It talks about making charcoal and even charcoal air filters, how to preserve meats and other foods for long periods of time, building log cabins, survival cement (I had no idea what survival cement was until I read it!) and digging old-fashioned wells. It lists some edible foods and plants that you can find in the wild as well.

This book will broaden your knowledge of the pioneers, our ancestors and their way of life as well as the hardships they had to endure. It is very educational, practical and may even be fun for the family to learn a few of the skills explained in this book.

Lost Ways

My thoughts

These books are packed full of knowledge and would be extremely valuable to have and study. I suggest that every household have these books at the very least for reference or practical use because the usefulness of this old and almost lost way of life. This kind of thing is no longer taught in any public school nor most private schools. It’s taught in the home. This day in age we never know if we are going to need this knowledge of how to do things the old way.

I give this three book series a 4.75 Star rating out of 5.
